The main thread of our research activities is the characterization of polluted atmospheres at the micro-scale

SAM structures its research in 4 main axes.

These have as similarity the environmental metrology, the gaseous atmospheres, the low cost sensors, the local scale. Moreover, the means used follow common approaches of metrology (sampling, measurement, data processing).

Odor metrology

  • Study of environmental odors (monitoring of emitting sites such as industries, waste recovery centers, biomethanization, composting, ...)
  • Measurement of odors from construction materials
  • Development of electronic noses (network of sensors)
Approaches: odor-specific sampling, use of drones, ambulatory olfactometry, dynamic olfactometry to measure odor concentration, measurement of odor intensity, physicochemical analysis (mainly VOCs), low-cost sensors, integration of residents in a participatory management approach to the nuisance, modeling, data processing

Air quality assessment

  • Monitoring of urban air quality at the neighborhood level (PM, NOx, O3, VOC,...)
  • Development of simple air quality indicators to help decision making, based on proxies (without pollutant measurements)
  • Tests of low cost sensors (e.g. comparison of low cost sensors with reference instruments)
  • Measurement of diffuse CH4 emissions (e.g. from waste recovery centers)
  • Monitoring of gaseous emissions from agricultural surfaces (e.g. NH3 loss after land application)
Approaches: specific sampling of surface emissions, use of drones, physico-chemical analysis (mainly VOCs), low cost sensors, database exploitation (urban proxydata), integration of local residents in a participative management approach, modeling, data processing

The study of indoor air quality

  • Continuous monitoring of indoor air quality
  • Development of simple and fast tools for the rapid diagnosis of indoor air quality
  • Study of ambient parameters on IAQ (T, Hr, air flow, materials, ...)
  • Development of tests to measure the effectiveness of depolluting principles (e.g.: depolluting paints; green walls)
  • Measurement of odors and VOC of building materials

Approaches: sampling specific to material emissions and IAQ, physicochemical characterization; low cost sensors; data processing

Analysis of breath composition

  • Development of tools for VOC analysis of human breath
Approaches: breath-specific sampling, physicochemical characterization, chemical sensor networks - electronic nose type, data processing
